In 2008, Plasma, a member of the Vintage Computer Forums, wrote,

"The AST utility displays the date incorrectly at startup, but the DATE command in DOS 6.2 shows year 2008."

So, the problem is a display one only. The year that gets placed into DOS is good.
Others have confirmed that behaviour.
