WWW.EXE Version 3.1c

This version is available to download.

While we do not officially support cellphones, they have become a convenient way to connect to the Internet and upload and download email or even browse the Web. There are many types of cellphones and the software within them is in many versions, therefore we are unable to provide support. This WWW.EXE version was found to be useful to some people in solving some connection problems. If this works for you, we are happy. If it does not work, please do not ask us for support.

POST.EXE Version 3.1a

The list of features and changes that may be of interest follows below.

• POST/LX now supports a new level of annoying "Clog" message suppression.

  In POST.CFG, you can add in the [SYSTEM] section the following:

  
  	[SYSTEM]

  	Clog=-1
  	

  This prevents additional confirming messages which we endearingly describe as "clogs". This setting stops warning messages such as "More than 50% of this message is a quote...", and "check the address..." etc.
• More IMAP4 support: Marking messages as UNREAD has a higher priority than marking them as READ.

POST.EXE Version 3.1

The list of features and changes that may be of interest follows below. You are encuraged to also check the additions to the Tips & Trick page for relevant items.

• POST/LX now supports SMTP servers that require authentication. Nothing needs to be configured if a server supports it, POST/LX will use it.
• POST/LX no longer sends plain text passwords when logging into a POP3 or IMAP4 server - provided the server supports it.
• During authentication, POST/LX now shows what kind of authentication it uses (plain text or secure, which means CRAM-MD5) and what login is used for authentication.
• Mailing lists may now contain full email addresses and not just the plain addresses (a bit slower when online, but more user friendly). For example: In the previous verison, a mailing list had to consist of lines in the following (strict) format:

         joe@isp1.com
         bill@someotherisp.net
         75568.991@compuserve.com
         

  Now the list can be like this:

         "Joe Blow" joe@isp1.com
         <bill@someotherisp.net> (Bill Whatshisname)
         "Fredrick of Hollywod" <75568.991@compuserve.com>
         

  This helps in creating the lists directly from the POST/LX address book (POST.ADR) as well as add the friendliness to your Compuserve correspondents, and more.
• If an attachment had no name, the name of last attachment seen was used.
• Reduced the likelihood for PalMemFail by optimising the allocation strategy so that less fragmentation should occur.
• Free disk space reporting now also displays which drive.
• Removed references to NEWS/LX from default POST.CFG created by SETUP.EXE.
• After sending the "QUIT" command to a POP3 server, POST/LX now waits for an answer before it terminates the LCP connection. Should help with servers that sometimes do not delete the messages marked for deletion.
• If in an email address there is a '@' within quotes, this address is no longer picked accidently as the email address.
• Under certain circumstances, an extra "Re" was prepended to a MIME encoded Subject header (i.e. a subject with non-ASCII characters in it).

WWW.EXE Version 3.1

The list features and changes that may be of interest to you:

• New serial port routines speed up serial communication 5-15%
• FastHUP now only drops the DTR (data terminal ready) signal, which causes most modems to hang up.
• Normal hanging up procedure is a bit slower but makes sure the phone line is really hung up.
• Changed http requests so that "empty page phenomenon" hopefully vanishes.
• KeepAlive=1 in a setup section makes WWW/LX send LCP Echo packets whenever an echo packet from the peer is received. Some servers seem to not only want their LCP Echo packets answered but also want to receive echo packets from the peer. Use this if a session is suddenly aborted for no obvious reason, but always after a certain time.
• When a TCP packet with data was received while WWW/LX was waiting for sending (waiting for an ACK) the data of the packet was lost, causing resends.
• After queries to the IAS (IrDA), the IrLMP connection is now closed (seems to have irritated some Siemens phones if the connection was left open).
• Prefix=none clears the dial prefix.

ROBOT/LX Version 1.6

• Debugging output goes to stdout again
• "= error " assigns error message and aborts
• Removed size limit (18 chars) for labels

Robot/LX Version 1.5

• Formatting display - cursor positioning, bold text, inverted text and more...
• Some support for windows in text mode (Not Microsoft Windows :-> ...)
• Handling encrypted scripts.

Robot/LX version 1.3

• Improved speed of display routines
• Now accepts VT100 codes (e.g. for screen positioning)
• Pressing CTRL can now abort ROBOT/LX in a controlled way
• Added the "truncate decap" command.
• Added the + and - commands to draw/remove a window (see ROBOT.DOC)
• $bytes now returns the number of received bytes over TCP connection
• Added -p option to use POST.CFG instead of ROBOT.CFG
• Variables can now have arbitrary names as long as they don't start with a letter that collides with the predefined ones (a, d, i, k, p, s, t, v)
• Variables can now also be named with a starting "#", e.g. #my_var. This overcomes the limitation outlined in the previous item.

SMS Improvements

• SMS was updated to better support phones where SMS messages may be stored on the SIM as well as in the phone memory.
• Improved support for phones that can store a large number of SMS messages.

POST.EXE Version 3.0a

• SETUP.EXE did not let toggle back from IMAP to POP3
• F7 from main screen (Edit) now allows editing of X-boxes as if they were folders
• Removed beta testers list (saves some space) - Sorry Folks! :( ...
• The box type in the [Folders] section now overrides the box type in the *.I2 index.
• MIME= in a box section now overrides the setting in [SYSTEM] (note that Alt-I still toggles the global setting!)
• When closing POST/LX, the CFG entry Mail=E in [FOLDERS] was still sometimes changed to Mail=X. Hopefully this is finally fixed!

POST.EXE version 2.2g

• MAIL=X and errors in online - we believe we fixed these, but are not 100% certain yet. These popped up in POST.EXE 2.2f.
• Bcc: headers are now removed from the messages during sending. Warnings: bugs in that code are likely; if you encounter any "strangenesses", please let us know. We tested it quite a bit and found no isues, but we could not test this exhaustively. Posting is now a bit slower, since the headers are scanned for the presence (and subsequent removal) of the BCC headers.
• "Delete all downloaded messages on POP3 server" no longer appears among the CTRL-D options when in a folder.
• If there is a section in POST.CFG named [SMTP] and an entry like MY_ISP=smtp.my_isp.com is present in that section, then "smtp.my_isp.com" overrides the setting given with SMTP= provided the setup "MY_ISP" is active in WWW/LX. This allows automatic adaption to different SMTP servers when using different ISPs for dialling in. Note that SpecialSMTP is even stronger than this option but does not allow more than 2 different ISPs.
• Improved safety when saving CFG files: if any problem occurs, the old version is restored.
• Modified formatting algorithm so that it is less likely that in quoted text, single words are moved to a new, quoted line. (Thank you!!!)
• Added display of modem init string with Ctrl-F5
• Save/Move dialog: current/all marked dialog now shows the name of the box to which messages shall be moved.
• When picking addresses to be added to the address list, there are now three options: add, skip and stop. (The "JEDi" Request)
• ISO-8859-1 characters in message headers are now displayed correctly in list view (even though they should never appear there!) - Another "nordic" bug...
• If a newsgroup message was forwarded to a different newsgroup, the original Newsgroup: header was taken instead of the one of the group to which the article should be forwarded. (Narvik's NGs)
• When returning from online help to message view, the header filters were not applied and all headers showed.
• ALT-F3 (reply to all) led to a missing comma if the address to be removed from the list (you own address) was added from a continuation line.
• Improved algorithm so that it is less likely and ASCII 254 character within the text is interpreted as a special file inclusion token.
• Removed space after "MAIL FROM:" and "RCPT TO:" commands in SMTP component.
• SMTP dialog now sends a RSET command after each sent message in order to cope with "some" servers that do not clean up the state after sending a message. (The "Telenor Bug" :->)

POST.EXE version 2.2f

• Added 26 Feb 2000:Added support for Special= parameters, and Connect= parameter. See more details here.
Added an explanation for DialAT= and Prefix= features of WWW/LX which were propagated into Post/LX. See more details here.
• Added support for big message files (prevent PalMemFail failure).
• Shift-F1 also shows amount on free internal memory.
• Removed support for RPA. (Relevant to Compuserve's Virtual Key).
• When replying to a MIME-encoded message with "unusual" headers, the MIME codes were not converted to characters.
• A trailing space in a filter can now be entered as ASCII(255).
• When using "reply to all", your own email address is no longer included.
• Compiled with CFG.C which makes CFG file handling much less memory hungry.
• Added menu item to delete .OLD file. (Old file contains message ids that were downloaded but not deleted from the server.)
• ExplodeDigest=1 in a box section of POST.CFG makes digests encoded as MIME-type multipart/digest to be split into individual messages during download.
• When a Bcc header is used, POST/LX now warns that it may not work. (Post/LX does not strip the header from the message. Some ISP servers do strip these headers.)
• When forwarding a message, the header lines included in the message were not properly decoded if MIME-encoded.

POST.EXE version 2.2d

• Now displays the presence of attachments and the message size
• In message view, the 4th built-in font (tiny!), which Stefan Peichl found, is now supported (use Zoom key).
• When selecting the "Cancel" as a reply to the "Really reply to an outbox"? message, it was ignored.
• When using 'm' to mark a message and the message is header only, POST/LX now asks if the message should be marked with the user mark (diamond) or marked for download (down arrow)
• The Shift-F5 feature (set WWW/LX configuration) now accepts multiple options separated by a space, in one entry, e.g.:

• HTTP download: FIN after 0 bytes downloaded is ignored
• Mask= sets the LCP mask for the second mask byte (default: 0x0a). Can be used to set to 0, which then means no chars need to be masked.
• If "+++" fails during hangup, "ATH" is sent anyway
• Delay after "+++" increased
• HD= (in [Global] or box section) sets the hangup delay (delay before "+++") to Default is 1500. If set lower than 1000, also the wait for "OK" after +++ is reduced from 2 to 1 second. Together with ATS12=5 (set delay of modem to 5*20=100ms) HD=200 should allow much faster hangup.
• HD1= sets the delay after an OK is received as an answer to +++. It should never be needed and so the default is 0, but it is there just in case.
• FastHUP=1 (in [Global] or box section) skips the "+++" stuff and just sends ATH to hangup, which is faster and should work to hang up most connections.
• When IPCP failed, the state was "strange". Hopefully fixed?

WWW.EXE Version 2.1e

• Ftp data connections are accepted now from servers that have a different address than the one on which the control connection is running.
• Parameter Ident=XYZ in the corresponding setup section sends the string "XYZ" instead of the default ("WWW/LX") as a reply to a Ident request.
• CarrierDetect=0 is now also heeded in IrDA connections. 
• When IRDA connection failed on redial, no error message was passed back to the caller (e.g. POST/LX).
• Reduced timeout for ethernet so that the "pauses" that sometimes appeared should be reduced.
• The time before the first TCP retry happens is reduced from 4 to 2 seconds and now settable using RetryTime=n in the corresponding setup section.

WWW version 2.1

• WWW/LX now supports IrDA connection with Nokia 8810 and SH888 cellular phones. This has not been tested with any other instruments, and it is not known to us at this time if any other instruments work. If you know of any other instrument, please let us know. (In one case, SH888 does not function properly, unknown reason at this time.)

  So, please do not ask if instrument XYZ is supported - what we know is right here. Try it, and let us know.

• WWW.EXE was optimised in many areas. You will probably find that it runs faster. Accolade emails to the author will be gladly accepted and forwarded :-> (I hope no one will complain that it runs too fast - well, you never know...)
• In bad connections, you may find that WWW.EXE is more robust, i.e. it can keep things going anyway, despite the best efforts of all the Internet Gremlins, windows code, and less than friendly routers :)...
• In some cases, we had occasions where ISPs PPP negotiations just did not go right. We solved some of these. This means some of our customers will have a better time, but it is not the magic stuff...
• OK - my pet: Ricochet Modems semm to be working fine now with WWW/LX. I have used these for some time and so far, no troubles. Hope you have the same experience.

  The Ricochet modems are devices that look to the Palmtops like a Hayes modem, and to the world like radios. Metricom, of San Jose, California, has rigged repeater antennas in some locations in the US. See Ricochet's Web page for more details.

POST/LX version 2.2a (Programs POST.EXE and NEWS2.EXE)

• Added RevSort=1 in the [SYSTEM] section which forces sorting of messages by date, in a descending sort order, i.e. newest messages at the beginning of the list.
• Ctrl-F5 displays the most important current WWW/LX settings. This is related to the capability of making changes via Shift-F5.
• POPFirst=1 in an email section (folder) forces a POP3 access before SMTP access. Some ISPs require that the customer identify himself/herself before any email may be sent out. This is done to defeat spammers. SMTP does not require an identification, but POP3 access requires that a client program provide a valid login and password, thus the customer is identified, and may now retrieve email as well as send email through the SMTP Server.
• Added Show=<parm> the [System] section. This will cause the chosen WWW/LX parameter to be displayed on the top line in place of the date and time. Example: Show=Dial will display the value of that field as it appears in the WWW.CFG.
• Several small bug fixes and improvements:

- POST/LX is no longer case sensitive regarding MIME keywords
- Detection of invalid addresses slightly improved
- SubSize=nnn (nnn is any number) causes a warning if the size of the subject is longer than nnn characters (useful e.g. for CIS forum messages)
- Squashed a bug that sometimes inserted empty lines into long messages
- Squashed a bug that led to a null pointer assignment when Signature= was pointing to a non-existent file
- When using an IrDA connection, POST/LX displays the state of the connection in the top line (ir=unconnected IR=connected ??=problem?)

• Authentication now works reliably
• Message retrieval is faster due to different downloading strategy
• Minor changes made in the screen during online connection
• The author, Alexander "'lexu" indicates that morethan 50% of the code was rewritten to accomplish the above

FTP/LX and TELNET/LX

PING/LX

WWW 2.0 - now obsolete, see above - WWW version 2.1

• WWW/LX is now able to talk to a class 1 packet driver, e.g. used for Ethernet access. What must be done:

 

 

Ether=1

must be specified in the corresponding setup section of WWW.CFG. The IP address must be specified by either My_IP in WWW.CFG or by setting the environment variable MYIP (e.g. SET MYIP=112.113.114.115 in the CONFIG.SYS) and the address of the default gateway must be specified by either Peer_IP in WWW.CFG or by setting the environment variable REMIP (in the CONFIG.SYS).

• If the ARP protocol is not supported, you can provide the Ethernet address of the peer by using something like Ether=0.0.123.42.47.98 instead of Ether=1, where the numbers are the decimal(!) representation of the Ethernet address.
• Default is "DIX Ethernet". If you need IEEE802.3, then use DIX=0 in the corresponding section of WWW.CFG.
• The WWW.CAC file is no longer used to cache IP-to-name mappings. Instead, a small cache in memory is used and if the host at that address does not answer, a new DNS query is attempted. This should resolve the problem with sites that have a different IP address each time you connect to them.
• Added a section describing usage of Ethernet cards to WWWDOC.TXT. As you see from this point, you need to look at WWWDOC.TXT again, and reprint it if you need the information about Ethernet support.

POST/LX 2.2

• When grabbing an URL from the screen, POST/LX now asks for a title for the hot list entry instead of automatically placing the URL there.
• The About window now shows the date and time this version was last compiled.
• In list view, some indicators (saved, forwarded, etc.) were not properly cleared if there were multiple of them.
• In list view, the 'D' for "delete on server" is now shown in the second column so that it no longer conflicts with the diamond (mark)
• Reduced number of filler dots in main screen (conflicted with Japanese font display)
• Messages with Japanese text (ISO-2022 encoded) are now decoded correctly (including MIME encoded headers)
• Messages composed using SJIS encoding are now translated to JIS so that Japanese messages can be composed (including MIME encoded headers)
• The message about "size limit exceeded" is now placed at the beginning of a message and not at the end. That way, it can always be seen.
• Menu File Remove Attachments removes all attachments from the current message.
• Moving the last item from list view left the display in a strange state. Fixed.

HV Version 2.2

WWW.EXE

• It now displays the dialed number on the connection screen
• A bug was squashed affecting POST type forms with a Proxy server

POST/LX

• Added PreOnline and PostOnline to run programs before/after online sessions (e.g. LXCIC) ([System] section of POST.CFG).
• After all mailboxes were processed, in some situations an erroneous "Processing xxx..." was displayed with xxx being garbage.
• Some POP3 servers provide message IDs (UIDL) which are longer than 70 characters and thus, not according to the POP3 specifications. POST/LX can now cope with them.
• From the menu or using ALT-I, MIME quoted printable encoding can now be turned on/off (alternative: 8 bit encoding).
• When replying to multipart messages, temporary files were not deleted for message parts that were not replied to.
• When a message was retrieved that contained a long line of 254 characters (or an exact multiple thereof) and the last character was a period ("."), downloading erroneously stopped at that point. (HPLX-List experienced it twice.)
• ForceDate=1 in the [SYSTEM] section of POST.CFG forces sending of a Date: header (needed for some servers).
• Fixed bug that merged long header lines in message view.
• Up to now, after an online run, the highlight was positioned on the first new message. Now, this is only done if there were no unread messages before the online run. PlaceAtSession=1 in the [SYSTEM] section of POST.CFG restores the old mode if desired.
• Some mailers do not display all of a multipart message and "abuse" the areas they do not show for putting nonsense messages there such as "your mailer is not able to handle MIME", which of course confuses POST/LX users. POST/LX now hides those areas too, unless "show all headers" is enabled.
• ALT-F3 in list and message view now replies to all, i.e. the From and all addresses in the Cc: and To: headers.
• Return-Receipt-To: is now also considered as a header containing an email address. Unless Confirmation=0 is present in the [SYSTEM] section of POST.CFG, a delivery confirmation is now automatically placed in the outbox when a message with a Return-Receipt-To: header is received.
• When switching between inbox and outbox in message view, the position within the message was not always correct (sometimes *after* the msg).
• When trying to delete all old messages on a POP3 server and there was no .OLD file, POST/LX did not behave correctly.
• Optimized the order of memory allocation calls so that the likelyhood of memory fragmentation decreases and thus the likelyhood for out of memory errors decreases.
• If there is a In-Reply-To header in a template (.TPL), the message ID of the message being replied to is automatically filled in.
• Preview: 2.2 will support Japanese fonts.
